COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A record-breaking lake effect snowstorm hit the Michiana region overnight, causing residents in southwest Michigan and northern Indiana to begin digging out today.
The storm broke local records, including 12.6 inches in
South Bend, Indiana, which exceeded the previous January 14 daily record by six inches, and 16 inches in Niles.
The National Weather Service reported a large 590-mile snow band with snowfall rates reaching three inches per hour, leading to localized whiteouts and hazardous drifting that resulted in school cancellations and difficulties for road crews on routes such as I-80/94 as well as a 30 vehicle pileup on the Indiana toll road in Elkhart County, Indiana.
