COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Residents of Branch County and throughout southern Michigan are bracing for more snow and then extreme Arctic temperatures arriving this weekend.
Light but steady snowfall is expected through Saturday, with accumulations of 1 to 3 inches likely across the region and higher totals possible in lake-effect areas.
As the storm passes, temperatures are forecasted to plummet, with daytime highs struggling to reach the low 20s and overnight lows dropping into the single digits. Dangerous wind chills are expected to dip as much as 25 below zero, creating life-threatening conditions for those outdoors.
In response to the emergency, the Coach Eby Youth and Family Center, located at 89 West Chicago Street, will open as a warming shelter beginning Saturday, January 17, at 7:00 p.m. through Wednesday, January 21, at 8:00 a.m.
The facility will provide cots, blankets, and hot meals to those in need, while the First Presbyterian Church will offer additional daytime warming from Monday through Thursday mornings. Center officials are urgently seeking community volunteers for daytime and overnight shifts, as well as donations of gift cards, cash, or supplies. Residents interested in helping can contact the center at (517) 278-5031.
