BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – The City of Bronson recently secured $1.95 million in federal funding to modernize its aging wastewater treatment plant. Part of a larger $2.6 million infrastructure initiative, the grant was included in federal legislation signed on November 12, 2025, and is intended to enhance the plant’s resiliency while preventing immediate sewer rate hikes for residents.
The project will fund critical upgrades to the facility’s return and waste activated sludge pumps, the ferric chloride feed system, and the installation of a new computerized SCADA monitoring system.
The Federal grant complements an additional $609,000 state grant secured in October 2025 to replace the plant’s 30-year-old ultraviolet disinfection system, which had been manually operated since a lightning strike disabled its controls.
Together, these investments address a nearly 75 year old system currently under a state administrative consent order to meet compliance standards by 2031.
City Manager Brandon Mersman said the combined funding allows the city to immediately address critical infrastructure needs, ensuring long-term reliability and environmental protection for the Swan Creek watershed.
