COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Monday morning the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Northern Indiana issued a Snow Squall Warning for southern Branch County
, marking the first time such an alert has been utilized in the county’s history.
The warning was triggered at 8:33 AM EST as a dangerous line of intense snow bursts moved northeast at 20 mph, impacting communities including Bronson, Kinderhook, and Gilead.
Forecasters warned of life-threatening travel conditions, specifically on Interstate 69, where visibility was expected to drop to near zero within seconds due to heavy snow and 35 mph wind gusts.
Although the snow squall warning product was made operational by the NWS in 2018, local meteorologists noted that weather conditions in the region had never necessitated its use for Branch County until this morning.
