COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Dangerous winter conditions have gripped Branch County
today, as the National Weather Service issued the first Snow Squall Warning in the county’s history. The Sheriffs department responded to a roll over accident on I-69 northbound around 8:30 this morning along will several other slide offs. North of Coldwater at least two semis were reported off the road as well.
Across Southwest Michigan, a broader Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Berrien, Cass, and St. Joseph counties until 1:00 AM Tuesday, while, Calhoun and Kalamazoo counties face more severe Winter Storm Warnings. Lake-effect snow and a powerful arctic front have already caused significant traffic disruptions, including a multi-vehicle crash on eastbound I-94 at Helmer Road in Calhoun County and a jackknifed semi-truck closing sections of eastbound I-196.
Meteorologists warn that in addition to the snow, dangerously cold wind chills reaching -20 to -25 degrees are expected to persist through Tuesday morning, complicating emergency response and road treatment efforts throughout the region.
