COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Maple Lawn Medical Care and Rehabilitation Facility, a county-owned nursing home, has received nearly $3.8 million in federal Employee Retention Credits after a four-year application process.
The funds, which include significant interest, were secured following a settlement with the IRS after an initial denial of their claim.
The financial influx marks a significant turnaround for the facility, which had faced severe cash flow problems and even required a $500,000 loan from Branch County commissioners in 2023 to cover payroll and expenses.
The facility’s financial struggles stemmed from a variety of pandemic-related issues, including a cut in residents, increased staffing costs, and significant Medicaid reimbursement takebacks by the state.
The loan from the county was repaid in February 2024, and subsequent expense cuts and a monthly Medicaid reimbursement increase in October 2025 have helped put the 2026 budget in the black.
Following the news of the settlement payment, the Maple Lawn board approved a 5% pay raise for all employees to help the facility remain competitive in staff retention efforts.
