JACKSON, MI (WTVB) – As subzero temperatures grip Michigan this week, Consumers Energy is ramping up efforts to help customers manage rising heating costs by linking them to more than $100 million in available statewide assistance for 2026.
Consumers says that last year it helped over 140,000 customers secure $60 million toward their energy bills, and now it is working to deliver even greater support through federal, state, private, and company-funded programs.
This month alone, Consumers Energy announced $5 million in new direct aid for bill payments, while the Consumers Energy Foundation contributed $250,000 in November to the Food Bank Council of Michigan to address broader household needs.
Lauren Snyder, Consumers Energy’s senior vice president and chief customer and growth officer, emphasized the company’s focus on customer well-being during the cold weather, stating that the energy assistance team is actively connecting people with resources to prevent energy from becoming a financial burden.
Customers can access help by calling 2-1-1 for community-based assistance, applying for State Emergency Relief through Michigan.gov/MIBridges https://newmibridges.michigan.gov/s/isd-landing-page?language=en_US if facing past-due bills or shut-off notices, or visiting ConsumersEnergy.com/assistance https://www.consumersenergy.com/residential/account-and-billing/billing-and-payment/payment-assistance for options such as home energy assessments, budget billing plans, veteran benefits, and senior credits.
Snyder noted that natural gas prices remain more than 25% below the national average, and the utility remains committed to supporting households through the winter and beyond.
