COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – COLDWATER, MI — The Coach Eby Youth and Family Center is set to conclude its emergency 24-hour warming shelter operations on Monday, as local temperatures are forecasted to finally rise above 25 degrees.
Since opening its doors on Jan. 17 in response to a brutal arctic freeze, the center has provided a critical refuge for dozens of people seeking warmth by offering cots, blankets, and three hot meals a day within its gymnasium.
Director Rachelle Everett noted that the mission-driven facility, housed in a 108-year-old former Armory, extended its original closing date several times to ensure no one was left in the sub-zero elements.
While the 24-hour emergency beds will wrap up, the center continues to rely on community support to cover the high heating and operational costs incurred during the cold snap.
Those looking to support the center’s ongoing youth and family programming can still provide monetary donations or gift cards for essentials through their office or Facebook page.
