COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In hopes of stopping animal related power outages at the Garfield substation, the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities Board of Directors approved a request Wednesday night to install an animal mitigation fence at a cost of over $62,000.
Engineering Manager Andrew Cameron told the Board they have had more than their fair share of problems with critters.
TransGard of York, Pennsylvania provided the quote and would install the fence.
The CBPU installed acrylic sheets at the top of the exterior perimeter fence to deter climbing by raccoons in 2017. Cameron said in his report to the Board that while the frequency of raccoon related incidents were reduced, they were not completely stopped.
In addition, the CBPU Board approved a request from Cameron to replace the entire fence that surrounds the Bennett substation, the Water Treatment Plant and multiple CBPU generation facilities.
The fence was installed in the 1950’s. But during a recent inspection, it was found there were large gaps under sections of the fencing and gates.
Cameron reported there was also missing barbed wire as well as damaged top railing in multiple sections, missing or damaged barbed wire brackets, missing tension wire ties at the base and signs of corrosion along the entire length of the fence.
Justice Fence Company of Battle Creek provided a quote of just over $103,000 for the work.
