COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Union City man received a sentence of 45 to 90 years in prison for the sexual assault of two children under 13, stemming from incidents in July 2019.
Anthony Cuyler was convicted in January on three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of delivering methamphetamine to a minor, for which he received an additional 18-to-40-year sentence. He will face lifetime electronic monitoring and must register as a sex offender if ever paroled.
Cuyler was apprehended after a multi-year international manhunt; he had fled to Mexico to avoid prosecution following the authorization of charges.
The U.S. Marshals Service launched a fugitive investigation under Operation Survivor Justice after local authorities were unable to locate him. Marshals located Cuyler in Mexico, where he was subsequently expelled and arrested in March 2024 before being transported back to Michigan.
The case was prosecuted by the Michigan Attorney General’s Office with assistance from Branch County Prosecutor Zachary Stempien.
Stempien described Cuyler’s actions as “predatory and heinous,” stating that the 45-year minimum sentence ensures the defendant will almost certainly spend the rest of his life in the Michigan Department of Corrections. Stempien thanked the Attorney General’s Office, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Union City Police Department for their collaboration in solving the case and achieving justice for the victims.
