COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democratic candidate for Governor, visited Flint Monday to unveil a healthcare agenda focused on requiring hospitals to disclose medical costs to patients upfront.
Benson’s proposal includes the creation of a new online portal where residents can report hospitals that fail to comply with price transparency mandates. Under her plan, the Attorney General’s Office would be empowered to hold non-compliant healthcare facilities accountable, a move she argues will protect Michiganders from “unfair” and unpredictable medical bills.
This campaign initiative builds on existing legislative efforts in Lansing, most notably Senate Bill 95, introduced by State Senator Jonathan Lindsey (R-Coldwater). Known as the Hospital Price Transparency Act, Lindsey’s legislation passed the Michigan House of Representatives with unanimous bipartisan support in December 2025.
The bill seeks to codify federal transparency requirements into state law, requiring hospitals to publicly post standard charges for at least 300 “shoppable” medical services in a searchable, consumer-friendly format.
