UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – In the wake of a devastating EF3 tornado that struck Union City last Friday, the Branch County Community Foundation has partnered with the Branch County United Way to activate an emergency relief fund for affected residents.
Erica Heminger with the Community Foundation says the monetary donations allow for flexibility in assistance because of the different stages of what will be a long recovery process.
Officials are urging those who wish to help to prioritize monetary contributions through the Union City Tornado Relief Fund to ensure resources can be flexibly allocated to meet immediate and long-term rebuilding needs.
Heminger says they are working with schools officials to develop a plan for the coming days, weeks and months to make sure victims needs are covered.
Although the school was temporarily overwhelmed by a surplus of physical goods like clothing and food, it continues to serve as a central hub where victims can access shelter, water, and hygiene items. Local organizations, including the American Red Cross and the Branch County Sheriff’s Office are working alongside the foundation to coordinate these recovery efforts as the village begins the long process of clearing debris and restoring essential services.
