BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MI (WTVB) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer joined law enforcement officials in West Bloomfield
this morning to provide an update on the investigation into a deadly attack at Temple Israel.
During the press conference, the governor denounced the violence as “heartbreaking” and emphasized that antisemitism has no place in Michigan.
The incident, which occurred Thursday afternoon, involved a suspect who rammed a vehicle into the synagogue, which also houses a school and opened fire before being killed by armed security.
Whitmer praised the swift response of first responders and security personnel, whose actions prevented injuries to the children and staff inside the building.
Following the briefing, the governor met privately with the first responders who were on the scene during the targeted act of violence. State and federal agencies, including the FBI, continue to investigate the motives of the deceased attacker, identified as Ayman Ghazali, while the community begins to process the shock of the assault on the largest Reform synagogue in the country.
