PARMA, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater softball team improved to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the Interstate 8 with a doubleheader sweep at Parma Western, 18-0 in 3 innings and 17-5 in 6 innings.
Laynie VanAken tossed another three-inning no-hitter in the opener with no walks and 7 strikeouts. Vandria Bucklin set the offensive tone with a three-run homer in the first inning; she finished the game 2-for-3 with 4 runs batted in. Rylie VanAken smacked a three-run round-tripper of her own in the third, Mya Porter tripled, and Addy Bucklin went 3-for-3 with two doubles and 3 RBIs as the Cardinals put together a 13-run attack.
In the nightcap, Coldwater found themselves trailing 5-3 after two innings; they responded with 6 runs in the third, 3 in the fourth, and 5 in the sixth as they collected 21 hits. Every starter had at least one hit; Mya Porter went 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI, Vandria Bucklin was 4-for-4 with a double, Addy Bucklin went 3-for-5 with a home run and 3 RBIs, and Mackenzie Searing was 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs. Laynie VanAken pitched 4-1/3 innings of 2-hit shutout relief with 1 walk and 9 strikeouts to get the win.
The Cardinals return home Thursday to host Three Rivers. Coverage on WTVB will join the doubleheader in progress at around 5:20 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
BRONSON, MI – Bronson improved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the Big 8 as they swept Union City by scores of 6-5 and 12-2 in 5 innings.
In the first game, the Vikings found themselves down 5-1 after 4-1/2 innings. They scored three runs in the fifth, tied the game on a Charger fielding error in the sixth, and got the walkoff win when Lydia Wells scored on a passed ball with nobody out in the seventh. Wells finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs, while Ashlynn Harris went 2-for-4 with a triple. Madison Shaw relieved Harris on the circle and earned the victory with two innings of shutout relief, allowing no hits or walks and striking out 6. Brooke Thomas took the hard-luck loss for Union City, while Ellie Williams was 3-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs and Ambrielle Phillips went 2-for-4 with a triple.
Wells and Roni Bir each homered for Bronson in the second game to lead an 11-hit attack. Shaw walked 2 and struck out 11 to win the nightcap. Phelps went 2-for-3 for Union City with a triple.
The Vikings will host Buchanan on Thursday. The Chargers, who fell to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the Big 8, will host an invitational on Saturday.
QUINCY, MI – Quincy lost the opener of a Big 8 doubleheader against Stockbridge 7-5.
Ary’Annah Freeman hit a two-run single in the first as the Orioles took an early 4-0 lead. The Panthers rallied with a run in the second and three runs in the fourth and sixth innings as Quincy was held to just six hits in the game.
At last word, the Orioles trailed the Panthers in the nightcap 11-3 when play was suspended in the bottom of the fifth due to darkness. Coming up Friday, Quincy will try, for the third time, to play a doubleheader at Springport. The previous two attempts, on April 7th and 10th, were rained out.
