COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater Public Safety Director Joe Shied says overall crime numbers in the city dropped by 7% in 2025 compared to 2024 but his department has seen a dramatic increase in fraud cases.
Shied said his department investigated 1,088 criminal complaints last year down from 1,175 in 2024. He says they saw a drop in nearly every crime category with the exception of fraudulent activity, that was up by a little more than 55% from the prior year with 151 fraud cases investigated last year compared to 97 in 2024
Shied says they also seen an increase in swatting calls last year which can put a strain on emergency services
There was also an uptick in traffic crashes in the city with the most accidents investigated in a decade, in 2025 CPD was called to investigate 577 traffic collisions up from 8% from 2024, Of those 219 were on private property, 317 involved property damage and 41 involved personal injury.
