COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The recent bipartisan movement in the House to reinstate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians through 2029 offers a reprieve for the roughly 500 Haitian residents who have settled in Coldwater.
Coldwater has seen a 40% increase in its Haitian population over the last five years, the potential legislation, spearheaded by Democrat Rep. Ayanna Pressley and supported by six Republicans, addresses the deep seated anxiety of families who have integrated into Branch County.
Many local Haitians have proved vital to the regional economy, with approximately 400 working at the Clemens Food Group meat-processing plant and others staffing large-scale farming operations .
Beyond the workforce, the bill’s advancement would stabilize a growing cultural and entrepreneurial presence in Coldwater, such as the Sheldy Focus Market, which provides essential Caribbean goods to the area.
While the bill still faces a final vote and a challenging path in the Senate, its progress has provided some psychological relief to Coldwater’s Haitian community, who have previously expressed a strong desire to remain and continue contributing to the city’s 12% foreign-born population.
