COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinal softball team continued its red-hot start to the season with a doubleheader sweep Friday against Three Rivers, 6-1 and 5-4.
Pitcher Laynie VanAken won the opener by allowing one run on two hits, no walks, and 19 strikeouts, tying the school record she had set last year. She also smacked a three-run home run while going 2-for-3 at the plate. Mya Porter went 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Both Wildcat hits came from the bat of WMU-bound London Hoffmaster: a solo homer in the first and a single in the seventh.
Coldwater had to overcome a 4-0 deficit in the nightcap. The comeback effort started in the third with a two-run homer from Laynie VanAken. In the sixth, Mya Porter hit an RBI single to bring home Julia Travelbee, then scored on Laynie VanAken’s second two-run round tripper of the game. With a one-run lead, Laynie VanAken came back to the circle to pitch the seventh, allowing a leadoff single, no walks, and a strikeout.
Porter finished 2-for-3 in the game, while Rylie VanAken had a double. Audrina Bucklin earned the win in relief of starter Mackenzie Searing, allowing no runs, two hits, and no walks with 3 strikeouts in her 3-2/3 innings of work.
The Cardinals will take an 11-0 record to Monday’s home doubleheader against the Lakeview Spartans. Coverage on WTVB will join the doubleheader in progress at around 5:20 p.m.
SPRINGPORT, MI – Quincy dropped both ends of a Big 8 softball twinbill at Springport, 13-0 in 5 innings and 16-8.
In the first game, Hannah Brown and Miley Poindexter had the only two Oriole hits. The second game saw the Spartans jump out to a 9-0 lead before Quincy could respond. Poindexter singled and doubled and brought home 4 runs, while Cali Richards was 3-for-3 with a double and a triple, Mackenzie Sattison went 2-for-3, and Gabby Norris added a double.
The Orioles fell to 4-6 overall, 0-4 in the Big 8, and will host county rival Bronson on Tuesday.
