BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – It didn’t take long for Tuesday’s suspended baseball and softball doubleheaders between Bronson and Quincy and between Springport and Union City to be completed, as the action resumed Wednesday afternoon.
Baseball: Bronson 6, Quincy 5
Bronson scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to turn a 5-1 deficit into a a 6-5 win against Quincy and a sweep of the baseball doubleheader. The Vikings also won on Tuesday 6-3.
Warner Wotta’s two-run sacrifice fly in the sixth brought home the game-tying and game-winning runs for Bronson. Ben Stevens relieved starter Joe Fair and picked up the win, while Max Byler earned the save. Seth VanStelle was 3-for-4 with a double for the Orioles, and JJ Wright went 3-for-4 with a triple and 2 RBIs.
Bronson improves to 9-2 overall, 4-2 in the Big 8, and will host Fremont on Friday. Quincy drops to 5-5-1 overall and 2-4 in the Big 8. They will take on Homer on Thursday.
Softball: Bronson 15, Quincy 0 (4 innings)
Bronson’s Madison Shaw threw a 4-inning one-hitter with six strikeouts as the Viking softball team blanked Quincy 15-0 to complete the doubleheader sweep. Bronson also won on Tuesday 20-6 in five innings.
Ashlynn Harris went 2-for-3 with a solo homer, Lydia Wells cranked out two doubles and two triples, and Roni Bir drove in two runs with a single and a double. Gabby Norris had the lone Oriole hit.
Bronson improves to 9-1 overall, 4-0 in the Big 8, and will visit Clinton on Thursday. Quincy falls to 4-8 overall, 0-6 in the Big 8, and returns to action Saturday at the Mendon Round Robin Invitational.
Baseball: Springport 7, Union City 1; Springport 13, Union City 3 (6 innings)
Union City resumed the first game of their baseball doubleheader against Springport and lost 7-1. The Chargers also dropped the nightcap 13-3 in six innings.
In the opener, Union City could only muster four hits from Spartan starter Andon Zienert: two singles from Carson Liles, a double from Brock Watson, and a single from Cullen Decker. Simon Swartzle drove in the only Charger run.
The nightcap saw Decker go 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs, while Payne also went 2-for-3.
Union City drops to 6-4 overall, 3-3 in the Big 8, and will play at Pennfield Thursday.
Softball: Springport 11, Union City 0; Springport 10, Union City 9
Union City was shut out by Springport 11-0 in the resumption of their their softball twinbill opener. The Spartans earned a walkoff 10-9 win in the nightcap.
Springport pitcher Mo Shoemaker threw a two-hitter with no walks and 14 strikeouts in the first game. Calli Wilkinson and Ambrielle Phillips had the only hits off Shoemaker.
The second game was a back-and-forth affair, with six lead changes before the Spartans scored the winning run with two outs in the seventh off a Charger fielding error. Elli Williams was 4-for-4 at the plate, Jezelle Nagel went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, and Hannah Schofield was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.
Union City fell to 6-4 overall, 2-4 in the Big 8, and will travel to Pennfield Thursday.
