COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Not even the defending Division 3 softball champions can withstand the bats of this year’s Coldwater squad. The Cardinals pounded out 17 hits as they handed Grass Lake their first loss of the season Thursday afternoon, 13-2 in five innings.
Laynie VanAken held the Warriors to two hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in two runs, while older sister Rylie was 4-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs. Mya Porter went 3-for-4, and Addy Bucklin was 3-for-3.
Coldwater remains perfect on the season at 14-0. They return to action Tuesday at Jackson Northwest.
CLINTON, MI – Bronson fell to 9-3 as they dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Clinton, 10-0 in five innings and 6-2, as the Redwolves allowed just four Viking hits all evening.
Bronson will host Springport on Tuesday.
BATTLE CREEK, MI – Union City split a doubleheader at Pennfield. The Chargers took the opener 8-1, while the Panthers won the nightcap 6-5.
In the first game, Brooke Thomas allowed an unearned run on two hits and struck out eight as she picked up the win. Madison Krummrey was 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Hannah Schofield drove in two runs while going 2-for-4 at the plate, and Ambrielle Phelps was 3-for-4 with a double.
Pennfield scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to salvage a victory in the second game. Phelps was 2-for-4 with a double, and Temperance Sours went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Union City will take a 7-5 record into their Friday doubleheader at Homer.
