BLACKMON TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinal softball team improved to 16-0 overall and 6-0 in the Interstate 8 with a pair of mercy-rule wins Tuesday at Jackson Northwest, 15-1 in five innings and 23-1 in three innings.
Rylie VanAken was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles in the opener, Mya Porter went 4-for-5 with a triple, and Coley Burkhardt was 2-for-2 with a three-run homer and 4 RBIs as the Lady Cards cranked out 16 hits. Laynie VanAken allowed one run on three hits with no walks and 11 strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Rylie VanAken went 4-for-4 with two doubles and 4 RBI, Laynie VanAken doubled and tripled and drove in four runs, and Mya Porter went 3-for-3 with a triple and 3 RBIs. Starter Audrina Bucklin allowed no runs or hits in two innings of work, while Mackenzie Searing pitched the third.
Coldwater is back in action Saturday at the Portage Northern Invitational.
BRONSON, MI – Bronson split a pair against Springport, dropping the opener 10-6 and winning the nightcap 17-7 in six innings.
The Vikings had to play catch-up right from the start of the first game, as the Spartans put up six runs before Bronson could come up to the plate. Lydia Wells hit a three-run homer, while Ashlynn Harris went 2-for-4.
Bronson bounced back with 20 hits in the second game. Roni Bir was 4-for-4 with a three-run home run, a double, and 5 RBIs total. Braelynn Gimenez went 5-for-5 with 6 RBIs, Wells was 3-for-5 with three doubles, and Harris went 4-for-5.
The Vikings are now 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the Big 8. They will host Hanover-Horton on Thursday.
QUINCY, MI – Union City cranked up the offense in their Big softball doubleheader at Quincy, winning the opener 15-5 in five innings and taking the nightcap 17-11.
Madison Krummrey singled, tripled, and drove in three runs to help pace the Chargers in the first game. Calli Wilkinson, Ambrielle Phelps, Temperance Sours, and Brooke Thomas had two hits apiece. Thomas was also the winning pitcher, striking out five while allowing just five Oriole hits. Josi Parker had an RBI triple for the O’s.
The second game saw both teams combine for 31 hits as Union City broke an 11-11 tie with six runs in the fifth. Lauren Tundevold was 3-for-3 with 4 RBIs, while Ellie Williams went 3-for-3 with a double. Karlie Eagen got the victory on the circle. For Quincy, Shaylee Cope was 3-for-4 wit a double and 2 RBIs, while Parker went 4-for-5 and Gabby Norris was also 3-for-4.
The Chargers improved to 9-5 overall, 4-4 in the Big 8 and will visit Delton Kellogg on Thursday. The Orioles fell to 5-12 overall, 0-8 in the Big 8, and will travel to Homer on Wednesday.
