MELVINDALE , MI (WTVB) – A Wayne County jury convicted Michael Lopez on Tuesday for the shooting death of Melvindale Police Officer Mohamed Said on July 21,2024. Lopez was found guilty on all counts, including the murder of a police officer and several felony firearm charges.
The verdict follows a trial where prosecutors detailed how Lopez shot the officer while fleeing a confrontation, ending a case that has deeply affected the local law enforcement community.

Throughout the proceedings, Lopez’s defense team argued he acted in self-defense, a claim the jury ultimately rejected after deliberating on the evidence presented.
With the conviction secured, Lopez remains in custody awaiting his formal sentencing. He is scheduled to return to court on May 18 to learn his penalty, which carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
