COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Gas prices across Michigan have surged to a four-year high this week, with the statewide average climbing to $4.19 per gallon as of Tuesday.
According to AAA , this spike represents the most expensive fuel costs since the 2022 energy crisis, driven largely by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Analysts at GasBuddy warn that while prices hit a record for 2026, further increases of up to 65 cents could be seen in the coming days as global supply remains volatile.
In Branch County, drivers are feeling an even sharper pinch, with prices in Coldwater reaching $4.29 per gallon, ten cents higher than the statewide surge, forcing residents to pay nearly $1.00 more per gallon than we did at this same time last year.
Calhoun, St. Joseph and Hillsdale counties also have elevated averages above $4.00, as the typical spring demand for travel clashes with restricted domestic supplies and a recent increase in Michigan’s state gasoline tax.
