LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Michigan Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt renewed his urgent call this week for the immediate termination of Michigan State Police (MSP) second-in-command Lt. Col. Aimee Brimacombe, one day before her scheduled retirement on May 1, 2026.
The demand followed recent allegations from a state trooper who filed a criminal complaint accusing Brimacombe of committing perjury in an affidavit related to a civil rights and gender discrimination lawsuit. Nesbitt, a Republican gubernatorial candidate, argued that the deputy director should not be allowed to “ride off into the sunset of retirement” on the taxpayers’ dime without facing accountability for what he characterized as a failure in leadership and integrity.
The controversy adds to a year of mounting tension within the department, including a massive 98% vote of no confidence in MSP leadership by the Michigan State Police Troopers Association last summer.
Nesbitt criticized Governor Gretchen Whitmer for failing to act sooner, stating that allowing Brimacombe to retire honorably despite the perjury claims further erodes public trust in the institution. While Brimacombe had announced her intention to step down earlier this year, Nesbitt and other Republican lawmakers insist that the new legal allegations warrant a formal firing to ensure she is held responsible for her actions before her official departure.
