BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – With one week to go before MHSAA Regional meets, track teams from Branch County were busy on Friday.
Shamrock Invitational at Berrien Springs
Coldwater and Quincy were at Berrien Spring High School for the Shamrock Invitational, an EQ (early qualifier) approved meet. The Cardinals finished second in the girls meet with 99.5 points, while Quincy was seventh with 45.5 points. The Cardinal boys were fourth with 79 points, and the Orioles tied with Dowagiac for eighth with 30 points. The Berrien Springs girls and Harper Creek boys placed first in their respective divisions.
In the girls meet, Coldwater’s Marie Powers was a double winner in the shot put and discus. Her distance in the shot put exceeded the published Division 2 EQ standard, giving her a direct spot in the MHSAA Finals. Ella Grabowski won the long jump. Quincy’s Brookelyn Parker won the 300m hurdles and qualified for State Finals, while Ashlyn Fickle was first in the high jump.
In the boys meet, the Cardinals had three State Final qualifiers: Travon Mitchell was second in the 110m hurdles but met the EQ standard, while the quartet of Travon and Trevor Mitchell, Evan Lewis, and Mason Sabaitis won the 4x200m and 4x400m relay races. Jackson Cilla won both the shot put and discus and had previously qualified for the Finals in the discus. Quincy’s Noah Rufenacht won the high jump and met the EQ standard.

Constantine Invitational
Bronson was at the Constantine Invitational, another EQ-approved meet. The Viking boys were fourth with 86 points, and the Lady Vikings tied with Hartford for fourth with 49 points. The host Falcons won both divisions.
For the boys, Brayden Fritz won the discus for Bronson, set a new school record, and met the EQ standard, the first Viking to do so this season. Stevie Wilson was first in the long jump. For the girls, Miriam Sanchez was a double winner in the 800m and 3200m, and Alonna Goodsell won the 1600m.

John Green Invitational at Mendon
Union City took part in Mendon’s John Green Invitational. The Lady Chargers finished in second place with 126.5 points, while the boys were fourth with 58.25 points. Centreville won both divisions.
For the girls, Kylie Creech won both hurdle races, Attica Hoath was first in the 200m, and Lillian Eyre won the high jump. The team of Katherine Johnson, Emma Eyre, Issabella Halder, and Hoath won the 4x200m relay. The best finish for the Charger boys came from Cameron Cayo’s runner-up finish in the 200m.

MHSAA Regionals are next Friday. Coldwater will be at Sturgis for a Division 2 Regional, while Bronson, Quincy, and Union City will travel to Hillsdale for a Division 3 Regional. Before Regionals, Coldwater has an Interstate 8 double-dual meet with Marshall Monday at Hastings.
