COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinal softball celebrated the four seniors on their team – Coley Burkhardt, Mya Porter, Mackenzie Searing, and Rylie VanAken – following a Senior Day sweep of the Hastings Saxons at the Rotary Softball Complex, 15-0 in three innings and 13-0 in five.
Laynie VanAken tossed a three-inning perfect game in the opener and struck out eight of the nine batters she faced; the ninth batter flew out to left. She helped her own cause with three doubles and two RBIs, while Addy Bucklin hit two doubles and a three-run homer and drove in five runs total. Vandria Bucklin was 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBIs. Burkhardt and Julia Travelbee added RBI doubles as Coldwater collected 14 hits.
In the nightcap, Searing threw a two-hit shutout and was supported by her teammates’ 15-hit performance. Burkhardt uncorked a pair of two-run homer and finished with five RBIs, Porter was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Vandria Bucklin went 2-for-3 with a double, and Laynie VanAken added an RBI double. Kendall Diamond doubled, and Harper Morrill hit an RBI triple.
The Cardinals improved to 24-1 overall and 9-1 in the Interstate 8. They will travel to Pennfield Thursday to complete a doubleheader that was suspended on April 21st due to storms.
CONCORD, MI – Bronson improved to 22-5 overall and 9-1 in the Big 8 after a doubleheader sweep at Concord, 14-0 in five innings and 15-0 in four innings.
Madison Shaw threw a three-hitter in the first game with no walks and eleven strikeouts. Roni Bir was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Lydia Wells went 3-for-4 with a single, a double, a home run, and three runs batted in.
In the second game, Ashlynn Harris tossed a one-hitter with four walks and ten strikeouts. At the plate, she was 2-for-2 with a double and a home run. Wells added a two-run homer, and Harper Ratkowski drove in three runs.
The Vikings will host Parma Western on Thursday.
READING, MI – Quincy split a wild doubleheader at Reading, wining the opener 25-12 in eight innings and dropping the nightcap 7-4 in four innings.
As unlikely as it sounds, the Orioles broke a 12-12 tie in the opener by scoring 13 runs in their half of the eighth. Quincy had 25 hits total and were aided by the seven errors committed by the Rangers. Cali Richards was 3-for-5 with two doubles and drove in five runs, Taylor Lewis went 4-for-6 with a two-RBI double, and Miley Poindexter was 3-for-5 with a double and a triple.
Quincy fell in the nightcap despite outhitting Reading 4-2. Josi Parker doubled and drove in two runs, and Poindexter hit a triple.
The Orioles are now 8-16 overall and 1-9 in the Big 8. They will host Onsted on Thursday.
STOCKBRIDGE, MI – Union City fell to 14-10 overall and 6-6 in the Big 8 after dropping a doubleheader at Stockbridge, 6-5 and 4-0.
The Panthers scored two runs in the seventh to get a walkoff victory in the first game. Hannah Schofield was 2-for-3, while Madison Krummrey hit an RBI double.
The only two hits for the Chargers in the second game were singles from Ellie Williams and Lauren Tundevold.
Union City will travel to defending Division 4 champion Mendon on Wednesday.
