COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County residents are facing one of the most intense allergy seasons in recent years as a “pollen tsunami” blankets the region in yellow dust.
Local health officials report that a rapid transition from a damp spring to sudden warm temperatures caused several species of trees—including oak, maple, and birch—to release their spores simultaneously. This concentrated surge has sent daily pollen counts into the “very high” range, leading to a significant uptick in visits to local clinics and pharmacies as those with allergies grapple with severe congestion, itchy eyes, and fatigue.
For many the standard over-the-counter remedies are barely keeping symptoms at bay. Meteorologists note that recent breezy afternoons have further aggravated the situation by carrying allergens across the county’s many lakes and open fields.
Health experts are advising sensitive residents to keep windows closed, use HEPA air filters indoors, and limit outdoor activities during the mid-morning hours when pollen concentrations typically peak.
They also warn that any type of relief for Branch County allergy sufferers may still be several weeks away.
