UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Union City welcomed its old rival Athens for a pair of five-inning baseball games and a single softball game.
The Chargers swept the baseball twinbill from the Indians, 10-2 and 15-6, to improve to 20-10 overall.
Tucker Zweng hit a three-run homer in the first game and finished with four RBIs total. Liam Payne was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, Carson Liles went 2-for-2, and Simon Swartzle added an RBI double. It was pitching by committee for Union City, with Micha Payne starting and getting the win. He, Carter Bezaire, and Bradley Hare recorded seven combined strikeouts.
In the second game, Nolan Chard drove in three runs, Jaxson Dadow was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Dalton Hawk went 2-for-2 and drove in two runs. Cullen Decker added an RBI double; he also started and earned the victory, allowing no hits, no walks, and five strikeouts.
The Chargers will host Mendon Tuesday to wrap up the regular season.
Union City’s softball team improved to 16-12 after defeating Athens 18-4 in five innings.
Every Charger in the lineup collected at least one hit. Brooke Thomas was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Ambrielle Phelps had two doubles in four at-bats and drove in two runs, Madison Krummrey was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Madisyn Washburn went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Winning pitcher Karlie Eagen allowed no walks and struck out five batters.
Union City will travel to Jonesville on Tuesday in the regular season finale.
