COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Residential energy bills are set for a seasonal spike as higher Summer Peak Rates go into effect across Michigan on June 1st.
For Consumers Energy customers in Branch County, electricity usage rates will surge by 50% during on-peak hours from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekdays stretching through September 30th.
This scheduled seasonal hike arrives closely on the heels of a separate, state-approved $226 million base rate increase that hit households earlier this spring, reflecting a broader 4.6% average increase in statewide electricity pricing fueled by rising operational costs and volatile energy markets.
Consumers says to help customers save during the peak summer months you should run appliances such as the dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer in the morning, late at night, or on weekends rather than during peak afternoon hours.
If you drive an EV, set your vehicle to charge during the late-night or early-morning off-peak hours to avoid the highest rates.
Lower your thermostat 2-3°F before peak hours. When peak hours begin, raise your thermostat 3-5°F to avoid paying premium rates.
While regional private utility customers face these heavy seasonal premiums, residents serviced by the municipal Coldwater Board of Public Utilities (CBPU) continue to bypass the heaviest hits to their wallets.
Historically keeping its electrical power rates 30% below major private corporations, the city-owned utility has avoided adding a new electrical rate hike for this specific summer window.
However, municipal customers will not be entirely spared from rising expenses this season; the Coldwater City Council recently finalized a 3.9% water and 3.0% wastewater rate increase slated to take effect on July 1st to back vital infrastructure upgrades.
