COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Despite recording one of the top ten wettest springs in local history, Branch County and Southwest Michigan could face a potential risk of flash drought development later this summer.
A potential shift in the storm track, combined with increasing summer heat and the development of El Niño conditions, could lead to rapid moisture depletion through higher evaporation rates in June and July.
While current conditions show no immediate signs of drought, Southwest Michigan depends on consistent, periodic rainfall to maintain soil moisture, crop health, and water levels.
Meteorologist Dustin Downs with the National Weather Service says that the transition from a wet spring to a dry summer has and can happen quickly, necessitating continued monitoring of weather patterns going into the warmer days of the summer.
