UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Union City Community Schools officially launched its highly anticipated $42.7 million facility consolidation and modernization project this week.
The district held a historic groundbreaking ceremony at Union City High School on Thursday.
The massive undertaking is funded by a voter-approved $19.1 million bond alongside a $23.6 million state grant.
The initiative will transition the district from three operating buildings into two.
The initial phases of construction will focus on expanding the high school facility to seamlessly integrate grades six through twelve.
The comprehensive plans feature a 22,887-square-foot high school addition, new science labs, a media center, district-wide HVAC upgrades, and secure entrances. Concurrently, the elementary school will undergo significant renovations to accommodate incoming fifth graders.
This includes an expanded cafeteria and new classrooms.
The project also targets athletic upgrades, such as a brand-new softball field and an eight-lane track reconstruction.
Officials aim to fully finish the modernized campus in time for the fall 2027 school year.
