BURR OAK TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – A serious crash involving a vehicle and a horse-drawn buggy Friday evening left four people ejected from the buggy and sent three of them to area hospitals with serious injuries, including a pregnant woman who remains in critical condition.
According to the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at approximately 8:16 p.m. Friday night, to Maystead Road near Needham Road in Burr Oak Township.
The preliminary investigation shows that an eastbound vehicle struck the rear of a horse-drawn buggy that was also traveling eastbound. All four occupants of the buggy were ejected in the collision. Two young children involved in the crash are reported to be in stable condition.
The 54-year-old male driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene and lodged in the St. Joseph County Jail.
Investigators believe drug use may have been a contributing factor. The crash remains under active investigation.
Responding agencies included the Burr Oak Fire Department, Colon Fire Department, LifeCare Ambulance, Michigan State Police, Med Flight, Samaritan, and St. Joseph County Central Dispatch.
