COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County, Southern Michigan, and Northern Indiana are all under a significant threat of severe weather this afternoon and evening.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service Northern Indiana Office have highlighted the region for potentially dangerous conditions as a potent low-pressure system interacts with a stalled warm front.
The storms are expected to develop rapidly during the late afternoon and peak into the overnight hours, bringing all modes of severe weather including destructive straight-line winds exceeding 75 mph, large hail, and the potential for strong tornadoes.
Residents in and around Coldwater, Angola, and the broader Michiana area should closely monitor local radar and NOAA Storm Prediction Center updates as the atmosphere destabilizes.
Overnight the National Weather Service did issue a flood watch far in advance of the forecasted storm system, the say there is the potential for in excess of 2-3 inches of rain is just a couple hours time frame and that may result in flooding of rivers, creeks and streams as well as other low lying and flood prone areas.
With the threat stretching well into the night, emergency management officials strongly advise everyone to have multiple, reliable ways to receive severe warnings.
Last nights storms did produce a pair of tornado warnings just to our south in Steuben County, but emergency management says they were not aware of any damage.
