LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Michigan state budget negotiations have ground to a standstill as lawmakers struggle to reach a unified agreement ahead of the looming July 1, statutory deadline.
State Representative Jennifer Wortz (R-Quincy) voiced sharp criticism over the impasse, echoing wider Republican concerns regarding the lack of transparency and fiscal discipline in the ongoing talks.
Wortz also criticized Governor Gretchen Whitmer for taking an un announced European economic trip at a critical point of the negotiations.
The friction has heightened fears of a potential partial government shutdown, leaving local administrative teams and public institutions in limbo.
Wortz says one possibility would be to keep the status quo on the budget until a new Governor takes office in January
According to updates tracking the Michigan Legislature, millions in taxpayer dollars remain tied up while critical funding frameworks for public schools and rural healthcare infrastructure remain unresolved.
With the state’s traditional summer target just 13 days away.
