CENTERVILLE, MI (WTVB) – The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office is warning of an active phone scam where fraudsters impersonating “Deputy Tate” (269-294-0764) claim victims have missed court appearances or face subpoenas.
Sheriff Chad Spence confirms the office does not demand immediate payment, threaten arrest, or request gift cards/wire transfers over the phone, urging residents to hang up on such callers.
Scammers are actively using caller ID spoofing to impersonate local law enforcement, making calls appear legitimate.
Residents are advised to never provide personal or financial information and to contact the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office directly at 269-467-9045 to report or verify any suspicious calls.
