COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Sheriff’s Office has issued an official warning regarding high-water levels across local lakes, urging boaters to minimize wakes to prevent severe shoreline erosion and property damage.
Under Michigan law, operators are liable for damage caused by their wakes, prompting officials to advise slow, responsible boating to protect docks and property.

Responsibility of Vessel Owner for Damage Caused by Vessel Wake
The owner of any vessel operated upon the waters of this state is
personally responsible for any damage to life or property resulting from a
wake or swell created by the negligent operation or propulsion of the
vessel, if the vessel is being operated with his or her consent.
Some areas of Branch County received over four inches of rain this past weekend.
