COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Michigan ranks fifth among the riskiest states for uninsured motorists, with 22.3% of drivers lacking coverage and facing up to $110,000 in personal liability for a serious crash, according to a July 2026 report by the Whitley Law Firm.
The analysis highlights that in addition to high financial exposure, Michigan drivers face immediate legal penalties, including fines up to $500 for repeat offenses and potential license suspensions.
The state’s high uninsured rate, combined with an average annual policy cost of $2,859, creates significant risk, as nearly one in five drivers is uncovered, forcing responsible motorists to bear higher risks.
The report, which evaluated all 50 states based on liability limits, premium costs, and legal penalties, confirms that a single accident can cause severe financial damage to uninsured Michigan motorists.
