ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – The Steuben County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to officially place a binding casino referendum on the upcoming November 3, general ballot.
This decision follows the passage of Indiana House Bill 1038, signed by Governor Mike Braun, which mandates local voter approval before any new gaming licenses can be issued in northeast Indiana.
Under the directive, local residents will face the straightforward ballot question: “Shall inland casino gambling be permitted in Steuben County?”.
County officials say that putting the choice directly in the hands of voters ensures the community will have the final say on whether to advance in the state’s casino bidding process.
By formalizing the referendum, Steuben County remains positioned alongside Allen and DeKalb counties to secure a gaming license for a $500 million resort-style casino.
Potentially located near the Interstate 69 and Indiana Toll Road interchange, a casino could inject up to $16.6 million in annual local tax revenue and create roughly 1,000 jobs. I
f voters approve the measure this fall, developers would have until December 1, to submit formal proposals to the Indiana Gaming Commission for final state evaluation.
