COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Although an official release is expected from the City of Coldwater later today, reports say the city’s Director of Police and Fire Safety Joe Scheid died suddenly Monday evening after collapsing at the Public Safety Building on Division Street.
After graduating from Grand Valley State University and the GVSU law enforcement academy, Scheid started with the Coldwater Police Department in December 1996. He was later promoted to Corporal and Road Patrol Sergeant in 2001, was named the Deputy Director of Public Safety in 2012, and then took over as Director of Public Safety in 2019.
Scheid also taught as an Adjunct Professor at Kellogg Community College.
Coldwater City Manager Keith Baker said with Scheid’s death, ” Our community lost a wonderful person, leader, advocate and friend to all in the Coldwater and Branch County community.”
He is survived by his wife Jodie and two daughters.
Very heavy heart this morning. Joe was one of the best law enforcement officials I have had the honor of working with for many years. He was tough when necessary, compassionate when appropriate and one who knew the value of treating his service as a public service. My family’s hearts and prayers are with his family, CPD and CFD during this painful time.
My heart breaks for Jodie ans the kids. Joe was a great guy. We had several conversations about Jackson and Northwest.
