COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – While much of the focus for today’s Primary Election in Michigan will be on the governor and U.S. Senate races, Branch County does have one contested countywide race on the ballot.
Current Branch County Public Defender and former Prosecutor Terri Norris is running against her assistant John Vincent for the prosecuting attorney seat that runs through the end of 2028.
Zach Stempien stepped down from the job when he was appointed to the Branch County Circuit Court bench in April. Former Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz was appointed interim prosecutor by Stempien. Since he does not live in Branch County, he was not eligible to be on the ballot.
Congressman John James is facing off against businessman Perry Johnson for the Republican Party nomination for governor, while Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is taking on Genessee County Sheriff Chris Swanson on the Democrat ticket. The names of Mike Cox and Aric Nesbitt remain on the ballot because they dropped out of the Republican race after the deadline to remove their names.
Republican Mike Rogers is unchallenged in the primary for the U.S. Senate seat held by the retiring Gary Peters, while Congresswoman Haley Stevens and Abdul El-Sayed square off in the Democrat primary. Mallory McMorrow’s name remains on the ballot, even though she has dropped out of the race.
For the 17th District Senate seat, incumbent Jonathan Lindsey is unchalleged on the Republican ticket, with Democrats Ashleigh Baker of Marcellus, Mike Jones of Niles, and Brett Muchow of Buchanan vying to square off against Lindsey in November.
35th District State Representative Jennifer Wortz is also unopposed on the Republican ticket, as is Democrat Jeff Cooley of Hillsdale County.
