COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) The much anticipated $2.89 million Pearl Street reconstruction project officially commenced on Monday, , launching a major infrastructure overhaul that will bring significant traffic shifts to the downtown area through late fall.
According to updates from the City of Coldwater, crews from Battle Creek-based contractor Hunter-Prell have started operations on East Pearl Street, spanning from Division Street to Sprague Street, before they transition to West Pearl Street later in the schedule.
The comprehensive project will fully rebuild East Pearl Street, West Pearl Street from South Clay to Fremont Street, and a oneblock section of South Hudson Street near the Branch County Courthouse.
The extensive project addresses structural deterioration by replacing a century-old concrete base, upgrading water mains, and making vital sanitary and storm sewer repairs to mitigate seasonal surface flooding.
Funding for the development is heavily backed by the city’s Act 51 Major and Local Street funds and a voter-approved road millage passed in November 2024.
While city officials are actively collaborating with Branch County representatives to ensure adjacent courthouse and annex parking lots remain accessible, motorists and residents are urged to plan for continuous lane restrictions and detours until the scheduled completion at the end of October.
