COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – When Gull Lake High School announced the cancellation of its 2026 football season earlier this month, in the midst of investigations by both the school district and Michigan State Police into an alleged assault at a team camp this summer, athletic directors who had the Blue Devils on their schedules had to scramble to find replacement opponents. Some were successful; unfortunately, the Coldwater High School athletic department was not. As a result, the Cardinals will not play a contest on Thursday, September 3rd, and will take a forfeit from Gull Lake.
In a letter explaining the decision, Athletic Director Todd Farmer said, “Coldwater could not find an opponent that would play them at Coldwater, and our closest away contest was three hours away, with an early start time.”
The decision will indirectly benefit Bronson’s football team, whose entire home schedule this season is being played at neighboring schools due to ongoing renovations at their stadium. The Vikings’ September 3rd contest against Stockbridge, which was originally scheduled to be at Union City, will now take place at Cardinal Field.
Coldwater High School will also host Bronson’s games against Homer on September 18th, Maple Valley on October 2nd, and Reading on October 16th, while the Vikings’ September 25th contest against Buchanan will be played at Sturgis.
