LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Flags across the state of Michigan have been lowered to half-staff following orders from Governor Gretchen Whitmer and President Donald Trump to honor the life and legacy of country music legend Dolly Parton, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 80.
The directive, which took effect Tuesday evening, mandates that all U.S. and Michigan flags at the State Capitol Complex and on all public buildings and grounds remain lowered until sunset on Tuesday, September 1.
State officials have also warmly encouraged Michigan residents, schools, businesses, and municipal governments to participate in the statewide tribute.
In a public statement, Whitmer praised the late icon, noting that Parton represented “the best of America’s values” through her characteristic empathy, grit, and spirit. Beyond her monumental seven-decade music and film career, state leaders emphasized Parton’s profound philanthropic footprint, particularly her Imagination Library.
The beloved literacy nonprofit, which has gifted over 300 million books globally, has directly benefited countless children across Michigan.
