COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council has approved a $42,700 targeted repaving contract to address the deteriorating surface conditions of Marshall Street. The vital corridor was left in remarkably rough shape following extensive lead water service line replacements, which left more than 50 utility patches along the northbound lane.
To remedy drivers’ complaints before winter sets in, Excel Paving will mill and replace 1.5 inches of asphalt from north of Grand Street to Branch Avenue, providing a, smoother interim fix.
While city officials emphasize that the underground infrastructure work successfully improved community water safety, they acknowledge that the resulting patchwork turned the busy stretch into a “roller coaster” ride.
They emphasized this falls resurfacing is strictly a short-term solution.
The city is currently drafting design plans for a comprehensive, $3 million full reconstruction of Marshall Street from Church to State Street, which will permanently address the streets aging concrete base and uneven manholes over the next two years.
The city hasn’t yet announced when those Marshall street repairs will begin.
