UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The upcoming launch of the Union City Food Club is set to bring a unique, dignified food security program directly to local families later this month.
Operated as a school-based grocery model in partnership between Union City Community Schools and the Michigan Farm Bureau Family of Companies, the program is specifically designed to support local students and their households by ensuring affordable access to healthy foods.
Much of the initial inventory is coming from local donations; community members and businesses purchased 52 animals at the recent Branch County Fair to supply hundreds of pounds of locally sourced meat.
According to superintendent Patrick McKerr , “Those donations included everything from rabbits and ducks to chickens, pigs, and a turkey,” establishing a strong, community-backed foundation of fresh proteins.
As the facility prepares to open its doors, stocking efforts have been further amplified by corporate agricultural partnerships, including 40 boxes of assorted Red Gold products provided by AcMoody Farms.
To make the program successful, organizers are encouraging continued investment from local farms, individuals, and businesses to keep the school-based grocery shelves fully stocked.
Families looking to sign up for the grocery program or community members wishing to volunteer or donate can coordinate directly through Union City Community Schools as operations continue ramp up over the coming weeks.
