MACKINAC, MI (WTVB) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer spent the morning of her final Labor Day as the state’s chief executive taking part in the annual Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk.
The Mackinac Bridge Authority says she led the walk.
In a video on social media, Whitmer says she picked the bridge as her logo when she launched her campaign for governor because it’s instantly recognizable and “represents the best of what it means to be a Michigander.”
She says it’s still amazing that union workers and engineers built the five-mile span between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas in just three years and says Labor Day is about recognizing the efforts of people on the job.
It was estimated some 34,000 people participated in the Mackinac tradition.
