UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – “The Shield” stays in Union City. The Union City Chargers defeated Branch County rival Bronson 22-14 on Friday night at Alumni Field to claim the traveling trophy for a fifth straight game.
The Chargers now have a 6-1 edge in “The Shield” series since the trophy was established in 2019.
All of the scoring on Friday night took place in the first half as the two teams exchanged the lead three times.
Bronson opened the scoring with 6:48 left in the first quarter on a 65 yard touchdown pass from Owen Losinski to Ben Stevens.
Trey MacDonald got the Chargers on the board with 2:32 left in the first on a four yard touchdown. Union City went ahead 8-7 thanks to Dalton Hawk’s two point conversion.
Losinski hit Connor McClelland from seven yards for his second touchdown pass of the night early in the second quarter. Bertin Marin’s second PAT put Bronson back on top 14-8.
The Chargers grabbed the lead back on a five yard touchdown by Hawk and Braxton Miller’s two point conversion with 4:27 remaining in the half.
MacDonald’s second touchdown of the night from a yard out closed out the scoring with 1:12 left.
Losinski wound up passing for 204 yards while Bronson’s Reid Stukey rushed for 125 yards on 20 carries.
MacDonald led a balanced Union City running attack with 65 yards on 17 carries. Hawk had 50 yards on eight carries but did not see action in the second half.
Despite the loss, Bronson had a 326 to 200 edge in total yards as the Vikings dropped to 1-2 while the Chargers are now 3-0.
Union City will host Quincy next Friday in a battle of unbeatens, while Bronson will host Homer in their homecoming game at Cardinal Field in Coldwater.
