LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A decision by the Michigan Supreme Court has resulted in 20,000 people being removed from the state’s sex offender registry.
The ACLU has been fighting to reform the registry for longer than a decade, with attorney Miriam Aukerman saying it’s one of the largest in the country and “sabotages every productive thing a person needs to do to successfully reintegrate into the community.”
She says the justices ruled the state cannot extend an offender’s punishment after they have been sentenced.
Aukerman says lawmakers retroactively imposed a new punitive law on people in 2011 when they expanded the registry and lengthened people’s terms.
