LEONIDAS TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – A massive residential fire destroyed a two-story home in the 53000 block of Shannon Road Friday morning, drawing a massive response from seven fire departments.
The Leonidas Township Fire Department, alongside automatic aid from the Athens Township Fire Department, was dispatched to the scene at approximately 8:23 a.m. after receiving reports of a structure fire.
Upon arrival, the first crews were met with heavy smoke pouring from the residence.
Firefighters quickly deployed handlines and launched an interior attack, but they were severely hindered by intense heat, zero-visibility, and significant hoarding conditions inside the home.
Despite these extreme challenges, crews managed to bring the flames under control in about three hours, remaining on the scene for roughly six hours to conduct overhaul operations.
Although the home sustained catastrophic fire damage and was ultimately demolished due to structural integrity concerns, officials confirmed that no injuries were reported among residents or firefighters. T
he successful containment of the blaze required extensive mutual aid from across the region. The Leonidas Township Fire Department expressed its gratitude to the Athens, Colon, Mendon, Pavilion Township, Climax Township, Burr Oak, and Centreville fire departments, as well as St. Joseph County Victim Services, for their vital assistance during the prolonged incident.
