MOTTVILLE TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – A 75-year-old semi-truck driver from Elkhart, Indiana, died Tuesday morning after his vehicle rear-ended a travel trailer in St. Joseph County.
According to the Michigan State Police, it happened around 8:00 a.m. on eastbound US-12 near Burke Road in Mottville Township.
MSP Investigators reported that the recreational vehicle was stationary at a traffic signal managing a one-lane construction zone when the eastbound semi-truck struck it from behind.
The semi-truck driver was rushed to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. T
he driver of the travel trailer was also hospitalized, but MSP says that those injuries were non-life-threatening.
While the crash remains under investigation, state troopers indicated that both drivers were wearing seatbelts and alcohol is not believed to be a contributing factor.
The incident prompted emergency crews to shut down eastbound US-12 for approximately six hours for scene cleanup and investigation before the highway fully reopened.
