SCIPIO TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – A Scipio Township woman is facing 17 criminal counts and ordinance violations following a July dog attack that severely injured a 12-year-old girl and an adult woman.
Hillsdale County Prosecutor Jamie Wisniewski says, that charges have been officially filed against the dogs’ owner, Holley Krasnodemski.
Krasnodemski is facing five counts of stray dog, six counts of unlicensed dog, and six county animal ordinance violations for failing to vaccinate her animals.
She is scheduled to be arraigned in the 2B District Court at 1 p.m. on October 27.
The charges stem from a July 10 incident on East Mosherville Road where four mixed-breed pit bull-mastiffs broke through a lock on their outdoor enclosure and escaped, ambushing a 12-year-old girl while she was riding an e-scooter, her adult cousin, Jannell Boot, intervened to protect her.
Both victims suffered severe lacerations across their bodies and faces, with the 12-year-old girl had to be airlifted to a children’s hospital for emergency treatment.
Following the attack, Krasnodemski voluntarily surrendered the four dogs to the Jackson County Animal Shelter, where they were euthanized and sent for state rabies testing. Michigan State Police investigators noted two additional small dogs on the property, but found no evidence that they were involved in the attack. Investigators also confirmed that none of Krasnodemski’s animals were registered with the county, and there was no proof of vaccination.
Despite the severity of the victims’ injuries, the prosecutor’s office could not file charges under Michigan’s dangerous animal statute.
State law dictates that criminal liability under the statute requires proof that the owner had prior knowledge of their animal being dangerous. The state police investigation yielded no recorded history of past bites or attacks by any of Krasnodemski’s dogs.
As a result, the case will proceed strictly on the misdemeanor and ordinance violations
